Twelve resorts join together to form the Portes du Soleil and its 650km (404 miles) of pistes. Eight of these (Abondance, Avoriaz, Châtel, La Chapelle d'Abondance, Les Gets, Montriond, Morzine and St Jean d'Aulps) are found in France, and the other four are located across the border in Switzerland (Champéry, Morgins, Torgon, Val-d'Illiez-Les Crosets-Champoussin). Maybe you’ve heard that the Portes du Soleil is made up of 14 resorts; this is because in the past Val-d'Illiez, Les Crosets and Champoussin all did separate promotional work for their ski areas. However, the three sites all fall under the authority of the same municipality so, officially, Val-d'Illiez-Les Crosets-Champoussin count as one single resort (hence the hyphen-fest).
Abondance: This beautiful, unspoilt village is about 5km (3 miles) down the valley from Châtel, with bus access to the rest of the Portes du Soleil network.
