If you’re heading out before Christmas, then the best place to head is Avoriaz at 1800m (5905ft). The resort always opens on the second weekend of December (Saturday 12th this year, mark it in your diaries!) and they celebrate the start of the season with a huge ski and snowboard test – a pretty good way to kickstart your season by testing some of the newest hardware available.
The party vibe of the resort opening extends to a special price on lift passes (a 15% reduction, which sees your six-day pass drop in price from 205euro to 174euro) and good deals on accommodation too. But, of course, in such a huge region, Avoriaz is not the only option and in the last couple of years snow has arrived very early at resorts such as Les Gets, Châtel, Champéry, Morgins and Torgon (with some opening at the end of November).
