It was probably a bad idea. It'd been dumping in Tignes all night and blustery snow showers were still rumbling in every few minutes. But the snow on the Grand Motte was amazing, too tempting to resist.

...sort of. My, what a bumpy start we're having. Some people are out there, prepping for their trips, planning their transport, booking accommodation. Our group of village people have planned trip one, and it's into trip two mode in the next couple of weeks. It's Selva, a mid-Jan chalet, and it seems like good value at around £650 all in. We normally take a mate's apartment in France, but think that catered in Italy will be within a few quid overall.

After two months with less than two dozen ski areas open in the northern hemisphere, the past few days have seen the 2011-12 ski season really take off with the first non-glacier ski areas open following heavy snowfalls in North America and more ski areas opening in the Alps. Over the next month hundreds of ski resorts will open for winter 2011-12.

With the New Zealand winter coming to a close a little earlier than most had hoped and/or anticipated for, Mount Olympus decided that they had time for at least one more extreme event!

www.skiinfo.co.uk reports that the first ski resorts to open for the 2011-12 ski season will do so today (September 21st) and Saturday (September 24th) with the benefit of fresh snow.

Over the past two weeks the competition season has really taken off in New Zealand. We had the K2 Chill Series Big Mountain which was a four-day, 2Star Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) held at Craigieburn and Mount Olympus ski fields last week
