Heel Edge Projects – Comp Success

Lynsey Ashdown, chilling by the lake in Tahoe

The season is sadly coming to an end in Northstar and the sun has come back out to give us some sunny last days after some crazy unusual storms over the last couple of weeks.

After just riding and filming out here mostly I thought I’d try my hand at some comps to end the season with, see how I faired against the Americans kind of thing. They were holding a West Coast Red Bull Buttercup Rail Series which involved three stops at different resorts around Lake Tahoe with prizes awarded at each event and an overall cumulative prize for the series winners. The first event was held at Boreal one sunny evening in March. I decided to enter the Pro division of the ladies as there was cash prizes on offer and as the end of the season approaches my bank account is looking pretty light! The setup was pretty mellow, consisting of several butter pads to allow for plenty of technical trickery to be had. I was pretty surprised by the level of female riders after mostly only competing on the UK scene, the US chicks rock! I surprised myself though with some tricks I’ve never done before and managed to get myself second place and a share of the goodies.

The next stop was closer to home at Northstar, our local slope. The setup was a lot more gnarly with really creative features thanks to some awesome park shapers. I managed to get 3rd place which I was stoked with as I had to fight harder this time.

The final event was at Sierra, the other side of Lake Tahoe and the setup didn’t disappoint. I was more nervous and putting pressure on myself as I knew a share of the $3,000 prize purse was at stake if I managed to place in the top 5 at this event. The weather was a bit shitty and the course was set so you had to hit everything really fast, which unfortunately meant for a mega hike each time. The finals worked on a knockout where every 10 minutes they get rid of the worst performing rider, which meant you had to nail your tricks every time else you were out! When I got down to the last 3 females left I was stoked purely because I couldn’t hike anymore! I managed to place 3rd in that event which when added to my previous placings gave me 2nd place overall and a share of the readies so I was chuffed!

We’ve had plenty of other female successes around the globe. Just a few hours south in Mammoth Jenny Jones added to her fantastic season by getting an honourable 3rd place at the Roxy Chicken Jam and Laura Berry grabbed 3rd place at the Nikita Chikita Swiss Tour Finals in Thyon. Claire Frost, after recovering from her shoulder injury, flew to Finland last week and took home 3rd place in the Oakley Girl Sessions Comp. Big props to all.
