Summer has arrived in Whistler. Blackcomb glacier is open and so is the Camp of Champions, which quite honestly is a candy store for skiers and snowboarders.
The Camp of Champions is a summer snowboard camp, offering coaching for all levels or you can buy a pass just to ride the park.
Today they kicked things off with a TTR 5Star super kicker competition. As I arrived at the top of the park, all that could be seen was thick cloud, a hot chocolate later and the clouds had passed to reveal an almighty kicker and some super eager riders.
In order to clear the massive 90ft gap kicker the riders pretty much had to straight line the run-in, and those that dared succeeded. A total of 40 riders competed for a $50,000 prize purse. The day saw some really impressive riding being thrown down and great conditions for the rest of the afternoon.
The finals saw Sebastien Toutant take first place with a cab double cork 1260, Matts Kulisek grabbed second and Mark McMorris third.
This was the first TTR competition Camp of Champions has held and speaking to the founder, Ken Achenbach, there is hope this will become an annual event.
I’m sure there is some hard partying going down in Whistler tonight, especially with the likes of Devun Walsh and Halldor Helgason about. I just can’t wait for next week when I’ll get a chance to ride the park and sample some of its candy.
